Z-Man Launches Digital Game Platform

Z-Man Games recently created F2Z Digital Media, Inc. to develop and launch digital versions of board games. F2Z Digital Media Inc. is an entirely independent company from Z-Man Games. F2Z Digital Media Inc. will have its own dedicated team to create quality digital versions of games developed by Z-Man Games, as well as titles from its partners.

F2Z's creation and Z-Man Games' move into the digital gaming arena is not surprising when you consider that over 19 million iPads and 37 million iPhones were sold in the first quarter of 2013, with 56 billion apps being purchased in 2012 alone. For 2013, that number is expected to increase to 82 billion.

The first game to be launched by F2Z Digital Media will be the very successful cooperative game Pandemic! The second edition launch of Pandemic! took the world by storm and sold thousands of copies in the U.S. alone. An iPad version is now in the works and its release date should be announced shortly.

The digital version of Pandemic! will soon be followed by its two expansions. After them, the next product in the pipeline will be Parade, a card game from one of Z-Man Games Japanese partners.

Star Wars RPG: Edge of Rebellion

Fantasy Flight Games will release a limited edition beta-test rulebook for Star Wars: Age of Rebellion soon. The book will be available through Fantasy Flight Games' webstore and participating retailers. The Star Wars: Age of Empires beta-test rulebook will consist of 224 pages and will be softcover. It will be retailed at a MSRP of $29.95. The beta period will end on October 8, 2013.

There are three planned cross-compatible Star Wars RPG systems from Fantasy Flight Games. The first is the recently released Star Wars RPG: Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook. The first adventure for this system - Beyond the Rim - shouldbe released before the end of the 3rd Quarter. Star Wars: Age of Rebellion is the second system and Star Wars: Enter the Unknown the third.  Star Wars: Enter the Unknown is expected to be released during the 4th Quarter of 2013.

Star Wars: Age of Rebellion allows players to take the roles of Rebel Alliance members fighting the Galactic Empire during the Rebellion time period. Unlike the final version, this book will have much less art and background material because, being a beta, it is intended to generate feedback. For the same reason, the information on adversaries, equipment, and vehicles is abbreviated to focus on the playtesting.

Locke & Key - Coming Soon To A Theater Near You

Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez' acclaimed supernatural comic book series Locke & Key has been optioned by Universal to be developed as a feature film. The film will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci - writers on the Star Trek and Transformers movies - through their Universal-based K/O Paper Products outfit. It will be co-produced with Ted Adams, the CEO and publisher of IDW Publishing. IDW Publishing is the company that publishes the Locke & Key comic series. For Univeral, the project will be overseen by Executive VP Jon Mone and Creative Executive Jay Polidoro.

This is not Hollywood's first bid at making a Locke & Key feature film. Initially, Dimension had the screen rights but they lapsed in 2010. That's when the superstar writers of Star Trek, Transformers and Fringe jumped in. K/O Paper Products and DeamWorks TV produced a pilot for Fox TV in an attempt to make the property a TV series but Fox turned it down. Although K/O Paper Products tried to shop the series around, no one picked it up - apparently due to budgetary constraints.

Locke & Key tells the story of three siblings who move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts after the gruesome murder of their father. The siblings discover that the house has magical keys that give their possessor a wide and varying array of powers and abilities, depending on the key. However, the family is forced to make a stand against evil when they realize that a deviously evil creature is also after the keys. As their popularity grew, Locke & Key expanded to tell a coming of age tale encompassing two generations and filled with heroism, tragedy, thrills and chills.

The Locke & Key graphic novel collections have been featured multiple times in the New York Times bestseller list, including the #1 spot on the list. The Locke & Key comics have garnered Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez multiple Eisner Awards nominations. The series has twice won the British Fantasy Award for best comic/graphic novel.

Joe Hill's claim to fame is not limited to the Locke & Key series. Hill is also the son of bestselling author Stephen King and the author of horror novels such as Heart-Shaped Box and NOS4A2. The latter won Hill an Eisner Award for best writer.

13th Age - Available Now

13th Age is a d20-rolling fantasy roleplaying game by Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet, lead designers of 4th and 3rd editions of the World’s Most Famous RPG. 13th Age is a game of adventure in a world full of monsters and magic, with groundbreaking new rules that make each character unique, connect them to the world, and focus on what’s cool about having adventures in a world full of monsters and magic.
Also, owlbears rip your arms off and feed them to their young. That’s a thing.
It’s a fantastic game for new players because it lets them play nearly any kind of character they want (“The only dwarf in the world with a clockwork heart built by a hidden race of dragon wizards? Done!”) and the rules for fighting, spellcasting and using skills are flexible enough that they rarely run into a “you can’t do that” situation.
It’s not a great game for a first-time GM, though. The book assumes some amount of experience with RPGs, and in particular d20-rolling RPGs. It also asks the GM to do some creative collaboration along with the players, rather than defining everything with a rule or a canonical fact about the game world. For example, wizards can make up creative names for their spells. In return for their putting more effort into the game, the GM improvises an additional cool or useful effect that’s not listed in the spell description.
As a player you can invent things for your character in a free-form way rather than picking everything from lists. For example, you define your character’s skills in a free-form, story-oriented way using backgrounds.
Every character has one unique thing that sets them apart: something that is real in the world, but doesn’t provide a mechanical benefit.
Characters’ relationships with the icons – the most powerful non-player characters in the world – connect them to the world and provide a resource they can use during play. PCs aren’t powerful at 1st level, but they are important.
As a GM you can quickly build encounters (and even monsters) on the fly, and use the story mechanics to share the job of worldbuilding with the players. Once you’re comfortable with the rules it’s fairly easy to improvise a session.
Combat doesn’t use a grid to determine where combatants are, how far they can move, or different effects such as flanking, pushing, pulling, etc. Using miniatures makes it easier to visualize the scene, but all you really need to know is who’s nearby, who’s far away, and who’s engaged in battle.
The “escalation die” mechanic keeps combat moving, turning what might otherwise be a two-hour fight into a 30-minute fight–one that’s exciting and suspenseful to run. On the first round, the monsters have the advantage. But starting on the second round, the GM places a big 6-sided die n the table with the 1 facing up. The PCs (and some very scary monsters) get a +1 bonus to hit. On the third round, that bonus increases to +2…and so on, to a maximum of +6. That way, the longer the PCs stay in combat and fight hard to win, the better their chances get because they’ve learned their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, and adapted.
The rules play off each other in interesting ways, so something fresh and different is happening all the time. For example, some classes and monsters have abilities that trigger when they roll an even number  on an attack, or a 16 or higher. Some abilities activate when the escalation die is odd or even, or reaches a certain number. Flexibility, randomness and surprise are a big part of 13th Age.
What’s the game’s default setting?
The default setting is the Dragon Empire, a high-magic realm that is in its 13th historical age. It is ruled by 13 demigodlike “icons” who are recognizable fantasy characters: the Emperor, the Archmage, the High Druid, the Lich King, and others.
We want each group to come up with the version of the Dragon Empire that’s most fun for them, so it’s very loosely described in the book. GMs and players can use it as a starting point and fill in the rest with their own ideas.

Civilizations - An Expansion For Clash Of Cultures

If you are a fan of Clash of Cultures, you will be excited to know that Z-Man Games announced an expansion to the game: Clash of Cultures - Civilizations. Unfortunately, it is not expected to hit the market until December of next year, 2014.

Clash of Cultures - Civilization adds 14 new civilizations to the game in an attempt to recap the development and contours of the civilizations that stretch across World History, from the Stone Age to the invention of gunpowder. Each of the 14 new civilizations will have its own unique advances as well as different leaders.

The expansion will feature new City pieces that players can use to increase their city's size. However, Clash of Cultures - Civilization does not increase the maximum size of four city pieces around a settlement. Therefore, players will now have to be selective and strategic when selecting which City pieces to choose when expanding settlements.

Another addition that comes with the Civilizations Expansion are "Elephant" and "Horse" units to the game. A fun fact that translates very well to the game is that not all civilizations had access to elephants and horses. Therefore, not all of them have access to elephants and horses in the game, either. Of course, the Civilizations Expansion is still a year away so more details will be released in the upcoming months.

Bad-DM commends Z-Man Games on this expansion, or its intent, at least. Many people who have played the original Clash of Cultures have complained that the game feels more like a light skirmish game rather than a civilization development game. The reason for this complaint is that there is nothing that really differentiates one civilization from another. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the upcoming Clash of Cultures - Civilizations Expansion, with the addition of culture-specific leaders and technology trees.

Cryptozoic, publisher of the The Walking Dead Trading Cards, announced that The Walking Dead Season 3 Trading Cards will be divided in two sets. Set 1 will release by the end of 2013 and will feature the characters in the prison.  Set 2 will release a few months later and will feature the characters of Woodbury.

Cryptozoic explained that the reason behind splitting The Walking Dead Season 3 set in two parts is to accommodate a larger number of characters and signers featured in the product. Like in the TV series, some characters will appear in both sets.

In order to give a comprehensive view of Season 3, both sets of The Walking Dead Trading Cards are being developed simultaneously. Autograph, Wardrobe, and Sketch cards will be numbered consecutively across the two sets.  Special cards will be included as follows: Autograph cards (1:24 packs), Wardrobe cards (1:24 packs), and Sketch cards (1:288 packs).

Rick and The Governor will be featured in the first two numbered cards, which will be promotional cards. They will be included in the October/November and December/January issues of Non-Sport Update Magazine. MSRP is set at $3.50 per pack, with 5 cards per pack and 24 packs per box.
